Social media gave everyone a voice.

It didn't give us a better conversation.

Good ideas get buried in noise. Facts compete with misinformation. Trolls derail discussions. Thoughtful exchanges disappear in the feed.

Thought Salon is an experiment in doing it differently.

Let's build a community of thinkers.

How do you participate?

Bring a question. Share an article. Make an argument. Tell the group what you've experienced. Challenge a claim. Defend your position. Hear from someone who sees things differently.

You don't have to agree.

You do have to come prepared to think.

You just need to come in good faith.

A Place to Think Out Loud.

Most of us spend plenty of time hearing from people who already think like we do.

Thought Salon is deliberately different.

We want people with different experiences, backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives in the same conversation, not because every position is equally correct, and not because the answer must lie somewhere in the middle. We want them there because none of us sees the whole picture.

We ask members to bring their perspective, explain their reasoning, examine the evidence, challenge ideas honestly, and remain open to the possibility that someone else knows something they don't.

BRING YOUR EXPERIENCE

What you’ve lived, learned, and observed can help others see what they may have missed.

Image

MAKE YOUR CASE

Explain what you think and why. Good ideas get stronger when they are examined and challenged.

QUESTION YOUR CONCLUSIONS

Be willing to reconsider where you’ve landed when evidence or another perspective gives you reason to.

Conversation Can Become Knowledge

We're not just interested in better answers.

We're interested in becoming better at finding them.

SHARE → DISCUSS → CHALLENGE → LEARN → REFINE → REPEAT

The cycle works when we engage in good faith and respect those who do the same.

Thought Salon is as much about how we think as what we think. Engaging seriously with different perspectives gives us an opportunity to test our reasoning, recognize what we may have missed, and refine our conclusions.

An Initiative of The Common Thread Foundation

Thought Salon is an initiative of The Common Thread Foundation, a nonprofit committed to strengthening communities through learning, curiosity, collaboration, and opportunity.

We believe the habits that make Thought Salon work, critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, respect for different perspectives, and the confidence to question our own conclusions, are worth practicing at every age.

Better thinkers. Better conversations. Stronger communities.
